The most common August smart lock problems and troubleshooting

We’ve got some solutions if you’re unsure what to do when you have a problem with your August Smart Lock.

August lock guest is not working.

August lock guest access

If the August smart lock is not working correctly, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the August Lock is on Guest Mode. Guest mode allows anyone with the App to unlock and lock your door using their fingerprint.
  2. Ensure you are unlocking and locking from within a range of where you keep your August smart lock (about 10 feet). This can be done by going into settings and selecting “unlock.” Then, be sure to select “home” or “away,” depending on whether or not you want to use guest mode. The other option is called “Auto-Unlock,” which will automatically unlock when someone arrives home, but this feature has been known to cause issues for some users, so it may not work for everybody!
  3. Check network connection. When the August lock isn’t working, you should check that it’s connected to Wi-Fi and has power.
  4. If you have difficulty connecting your August lock to Wi-Fi, try restarting the device. If this doesn’t solve your problem, try unplugging and plugging in your August lock again.
  5. Check all connections between devices (iPhones/iPads). If any of these connections are broken, this could lead to problems with your Apple device(s) connecting correctly once again, making it harder to get one thing done immediately as soon as possible without having anything else interfere!
  6. Suppose you’re having trouble with voice control on your device. In that case, you can change some settings within the Alexa or Google Home App to ensure that voice commands work correctly with Alexa or Google Assistant-enabled devices.

August lock won’t calibrate or error calibrating.

August lock won't calibrate or error calibrating.

Sometimes, if your August lock stops working, you need to calibrate your August lock.

If you’re having trouble calibrating your August lock, there are a few things you can check to make sure everything is in order:

  1. Ensure that your phone and lock are close and in the Bluetooth range.
  2. Make sure you have removed and reinserted the August lock batteries.
  3. Make sure that your August smart lock is connected to the internet. If it isn’t, try restarting it by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
  4. Check for dirt or dust on your phone or the door handle where you place your August Smart Lock Pro (August Doorbell Cam). A little dust shouldn’t affect anything too much. However, if there’s excessive grime covering either device, try cleaning it off before trying again or giving up and contacting customer support to troubleshoot this issue further.

August lock is loose.

August lock is loose

A loose August smart lock means that your August smart lock can move around in the recessed area of your door. The key to fixing this problem is tightening the screws that hold it. If you have multiple August locks, this will be a recurring issue since they are all connected and can come loose from time to time.

If the August smart lock is loose, you’ll hear a clicking sound as you try to turn the handle. If this happens, something caught between your door and frame may need to be removed.

To loosen the screws on the mounting plate:

  1. Remove the lock from the mounting plate by releasing the side latches
  2. Unscrew each screw half a turn using a Phillips head screwdriver
  3. Check that you can wiggle the mounting plate slightly to ensure the screws are loose enough
  4. Re-affix the Smart Lock to the mounting plate

Once this is done, put your August Smart Lock back on your door and recalibrate your lock.

The inability to operate the Smart Lock using the App can sometimes happen over time and occurs when the batteries are low.

August lock jammed

August lock jammed

If your August lock is jamming, please try the following solutions:

  • Check the August lock motor. Maybe something is wrong with your lock motor. If your lock jams when you try to operate it using the App, you may wish to perform a motor reset. A motor reset reorients the lock.
  • Make sure you are using an adapter that matches the deadbolt’s tailpiece. A wrong adapter will cause the August lock to jam.
  • Make sure the August lock turns in hand.
    1. Remove the lock from the mounting plate.
    2. Hold the lock in hand and verify that the lock turns freely
    3. While the lock is off the door, recalibrate the lock using the App
    4. Place the lock back on the mounting plate and secure the wing latches
    5. Calibrate the lock again with the door open to ensure the deadbolt is fully extending

August lock unavailable

August lock unavailable

When you see the August Lock unavailable message, there are a few things to check:

  1. Make sure the lock is within range of your hub.
  2. Check that your lock is connected to the App. If it’s not responding to commands, it may be offline.
  3. Check that your internet connection works. The August lock needs an internet connection to function correctly and send data back and forth between its hub and other devices. Ensure all other devices are connected correctly before trying again with any new ones—including tablets!
  4. Make sure your lock battery isn’t dead! A low battery level can cause some strange behavior sometimes.
  5. Check that your lock is within range of your Wi-Fi router. If it’s too far from the router, this can cause a drop in connection strength and thus prevent proper communication between August and its hub or App.
  6. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone before connecting with August through Bluetooth mode.

August lock stopped working.

August lock stopped working

If your August lock has stopped working when you are using the August lock app to open the lock, then it’s likely that one or more of these conditions have occurred:

  1. Check the installation screws. Maybe you had Over-tightening the screws during the August Smart Lock installation. Over-tightening the mounting plate screws may result in a clicking noise from the lock or even failure to operate with the App.
  2. Check Bluetooth connection. The Bluetooth connection between your phone and Smart Lock may be lost. Please connect again.
  3. Make sure the August Lock is not offline. Please check your WIFI bridge and connect them again.
  4. Ensure your house Wi-Fi is working as expected by checking that you have other devices connected or using another device’s Wi-Fi connection to test it.
  5. You should also check that the August Lock battery isn’t low (if so, charge it).
  6. A foreign object or debris blocks the August lock. In this case, you should move around any objects blocking your locking mechanism and see if the August lock works again.
  7. Reboot your August locks. Generally, you can open the lock faceplate and remove/reinsert one battery to reboot your lock.

August lock is not connecting.

August lock is not connecting

If your August lock is not connecting with Bluetooth or WIFI, try the following:

  • Check your internet connection. The August lock must be connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network. If you are having trouble connecting with your current Wi-Fi network, try connecting to another one on the same router or move closer to the router until you find one that works.
  • Try to turn off and turn on your Bluetooth. Go to Settings – Select Bluetooth – turn off the Bluetooth for 30 seconds and then turn it on. At this point, check whether you can connect to your lock over Bluetooth.
  • Reboot your phone and try to connect again.
  • Try to force quit the August app and open it again.
  • Check your Wi-Fi settings. Ensure you have selected the correct Wi-Fi network and the lock connects. If it is not, try selecting another network.
  • Try rebooting your August lock by removing the batteries and reinserting them.
  • Trying to Replace the Smart Lock batteries. If none of the above troubleshooting steps work, try replacing the batteries in the Smart Lock with new ones.

August lock keeps going offline.

August lock keeps going offline.

If your August LOCK keeps going offline, there are several things to check:

  • Check the internet connection. Ensure you have a strong internet connection on your phone and the lock. If this is not the issue, try restarting your router.
  • Check the battery in your August lock. It is possibly low or dead and needs to be replaced.
  • Make sure you are using the correct adapter for your deadbolt. Look at the adapter and check that the notches are situated at 12 and 6 (straight up and down) when the deadbolt is fully retracted. The wrong adapter may fit on your tailpiece, but it will not move your deadbolt fully and may cause your lock to show the incorrect lock state.
  • Check the August Hub. Ensure the August Hub is connected to Wi-Fi and the light is green or yellow—not red. Green indicates good connectivity; yellow means there’s an issue with your connection; red means it isn’t working and needs resetting (hold down the reset button on top of the hub for 20 seconds).
  • If the August App shows that your lock is unlocked when it is locked, or if the circle turns grey and nothing happens, your lock may need to be recalibrated.

August lock flash green

August lock flash green

If your lock is flashing green, it receives power and works correctly. The battery level icon will show a green light when fully charged. This can also indicate that your door is open and the August Connect Wi-Fi Adapter is connected to your doorbell system via Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE).

August Smart Lock flashing red

August Smart Lock flashing red

If your August Smart Lock is flashing red, it generally means you need to replace the batteries for your lock.

To solve this problem, please replace the batteries for your August lock with four new AA batteries at once. Mixing old batteries with new ones can cause batteries to leak, which may damage your smart lock.

August smart lock beeping

August smart lock beeping

If your August Smart Lock has been making noise or beeping, which may be caused by one of the following:

  • Low battery: Check the batteries in your August lock. If they are low or out of power completely, it could be causing the noise you hear. Just replace them with new ones and try again!
  • Calibration error: A wrong plastic adapter during installation will cause the Calibration error and beeping. Please make sure you are using the correct adapter for your August lock.
  • August lock jam: A lock jam is another cause for the Morse code sound. If you suspect your lock is jammed, remove the lock from your door and check for any obstructions preventing the deadbolt from being thrown smoothly.

August lock is not working with the home kitYou can try a few things if you can not connect your August Smart Lock with the Apple home kit with the August lock ags.

  • Check your internet connection, and make sure you have a good connection for all your devices.
  • Reset your August lock and connect them again. You can reset your August lock by pressing and holding the red button on the back of the Wi-Fi Smart Lock for 5 seconds, then remove and reinsert one battery.
  • Try setup up your August lock directly by using the Apple HomeKit App.

August lock keypad is not working.

August lock keypad is not working

If the August keypad is not working and you can not unlock your August lock after you entered your entry code with the August keypad, please try the following solution:

  • Make sure your August lock is not in the “Setup model.”
  • Check your user code and make sure it is correct. If the keypad buzzes once after the code is entered and the door does not unlock, the entry code is incorrect; please try again.
  • Check the connection between the keypad and the August lock. If the keypad buzzes twice after a code is entered and the door fails to unlock, the keypad is not communicating with the lock.
  • Check the connection between Your phone and August lock. If you find the connection has an issue, please reboot the lock first. To reboot the lo,k: remove one battery and replace it.
  • Reset the August keypad. If your August still does not work, you must factory reset your August keypad.

How to reset the August keypad:

  1. Open the August App and go to Keypad Settings
  2. Select the option to Disconnect the Keypad (note: must be within Bluetooth range)
  3. Once you select the disconnect option, you will be sent a 4-digit code to reset the keypad physically
  4. Enter this code into the keypad to reset the device.

PLEASE NOTE: Resetting the keypad will wipe out all existing entry codes and need to be added back after the keypad is set up again.

August lock is not auto-unlocking.

August lock is not auto-unlocking

If your August Lock is not automatically unlocking the door, it’s most likely for one of these reasons:

  • Ensure that your August lock is paired with the device you want to use as a key. If using another user’s phone, ensure they have given you access.
  • Check if your August Lock is connected to the internet. If it isn’t connected and has no Wi-Fi access, it won’t be able to unlock when someone presses the button on their App.
  • Make sure you have enabled Bluetooth and GPS on your phone.
  • Ensure you allow the August lock app to use your phone location service.
  • Make sure that you have the latest firmware installed on your device. If this doesn’t resolve your issue and if it hasn’t been updated recently, then try updating the firmware now by going into Settings > About (on iOS) or System Info (on Android).

FAQs About August Lock Troubleshooting

What is an August smart lock

August Smart Lock is a connected door lock that connects to your smartphone and allows you to remotely unlock the door with your phone, create virtual keys for guests, or even send notifications to other people.

August Smart Lock is Wi-Fi-enabled to connect with your home or other Wi-Fi networks. It can also be used with Bluetooth technology if the user has an iOS device.

How does an august lock work

The August Smart Lock is a battery-powered sensor that attaches to your existing deadbolt. When you get within range of the lock using Bluetooth, it allows you to unlock and lock your door right from your smartphone. And if you’re not close enough to use the App, there’s also a keypad on top that lets you enter numbers or swipe a code to access your home.

The August Smart Lock works with iOS and Android devices, so long as they have Bluetooth 4.0 or higher installed (and most do). Once paired with an app called HomeKit via Apple’s Home app, users can create rules for when their locks should automatically open when someone arrives at home—like only unlocking after dark—or keep certain family members’ keys from working unless others are nearby as well (which could be helpful if someone has recently moved out).

To reset your August smart lock:

  1. On your phone, open the August App and go to the lock circle screen, which is the screen that shows you whether your door is locked or unlocked.
  2. Select the Settings menu (gear icon).
  3. Select the device you wish to reset.
  4. Scroll to factory reset.
  5. Select “Reset Lock.”

Here’s how to calibrate the August lock:

  1. Remove and reinsert the August lock batteries
  2. Enable the Bluetooth and keep the August in the Bluetooth range.
  3. Open the August App and navigate to the affected lock
  4. Select Lock Settings by tapping the gear icon .
  5. Scroll to and tap on Calibrate Lock
  6. Follow in-app instructions to recalibrate

To reboot, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the battery cover.
  2. Remove and reinsert a battery.
  3. Ensure the lock powers back up. The lock’s Wi-Fi connection may take a couple of minutes to reconnect.

Almost all August smart locks can work with Google Home or any Google Assistant-enabled device. With August’s Google Assistant integration, you can ask Google Assistant to control your door using your voice.

If you have an August Smart Lock and a Google Home, there are a few steps you need to take to get the two working together:

  1. Open the Google Home app and log in to your Google Account
  2. Select the Add (+) option at the top
  3. Select Set up a device
  4. Under Works With, choose “Have something already set up?”
  5. Scroll to or search for August Home in the Manage Accounts menu
  6. Follow the steps to sign in to and verify your August Account
  7. You need to agree to allow Google to Operate your August Smart Locks / View the Status of your August Smart Locks
  8. Next, select a security code/PIN. Be sure to use a unique code, which is needed to operate your lock using Google Home.
  9. If applicable, add a Doorbell Cam.

Guest access is a feature that allows you to Issue keys to guests and visitors without giving them an actual key. It’s available on the August app.

With guest access, guests can unlock the door at their destination. To enable August Guest access:

  1. Open the August App and select the Guest Icon from the menu on the lower right of the screen.
  2. Select Invite and then choose an invite option. Enter the guest’s phone number or select them from your contact list to invite them to use your lock.
  3. Select Send Invite once you have added your guest and designated their access level and type.
  4. Guests will receive a text notification with a link to download the August App.
  5. Guest download and install the August App; they will see your lock in their Keychain on their August App.
  6. Now your guest can use guest access to unlock your door.

If you’re having trouble with your August Hub(August connect), the first thing to do is reset it. Here’s how:

  • Leave the device plugged in
  • Press and hold the reset button down for 5 seconds, then let go
  • You should see a pulsating green light indicating that the device is back in setup mode.

Generally, the August Smart Lock firmware update will notify you and begin automatically. But also, you can check the firmware version on the App under Lock Settings. Tap the Menu Icon and navigate to Settings. Select your lock and navigate to Firmware Version, where you can view your firmware version.

To update August smart lock firmware:

  • Make sure your August smart lock is within Bluetooth range and has Bluetooth enabled on your phone.
  • Open your August smart lock app.
  • Keep your phone close to your August lock.
  • Make sure your August smart lock has connected with your August app.
  • Make sure your phone is connected to your local Wi-Fi network.
  • If Firmware updates are released, Firmware updates begin automatically.
  • Wait about 5-15 minutes.
  • You will receive a notification after the August lock firmware update is successful.

The August Lock is a Wi-Fi-connected device and will not work without it. If your lock does not have an internet connection, then the August app won’t be able to connect with it, and you won’t be able to use it.

If you don’t have an internet connection but have a SIM card installed in your phone, then you’ll still be able to use the lock as long as both devices are on the same network (e.g., Wi-Fi or SIM card).

For different August locks, they maybe use different types of batteries:

  • Wi-Fi Smart Lock – 2 3V CR123 or CR123A lithium (non-rechargeable) batteries
  • All other August Smart Locks – 4 new AA alkaline (non-rechargeable) batteries

What happens if the August Smart Lock battery dies?

If you notice that your August Smart Lock gives you low-battery warnings, you need to replace batteries asap before your August smart lock stop working. Try double-checking the battery.

But if your August smart lock battery dies totally, you can still use your key to unlock the door.

You can not check the battery level for your August devices in the August App, but you will be notified when the batteries need to be replaced.

You will get a low-battery notification on your phone’s unlock screen when your August lock’s batteries reach 25% capacity; now you need to replace batteries asap.

If you don’t replace the battery in time, you will receive a low-battery notification from email every day.

To replace batteries for your August lock:

  1. Removing battery cover: Remove the faceplate to remove the battery compartment cover.
  2. Replacing batteries: Remove all 4 or 2 standard non-rechargeable CR123 lithium batteries from the battery compartment, ensuring the positive (+) ends are pointing up. After you replace both batteries, you will see the Smart Lock blink green twice, followed by a third, longer blink.
  3. Replacing the battery cover, place the faceplate back onto the August Smart Lock.

How to Replace the Batteries in Your August Smart Lock?

Yes! You can manually turn the August lock by using the knob.

If you’re having trouble with your August Smart Lock Adapter, we’re here to help. The adapter is the part of the lock that attaches to your door and allows it to communicate with your phone.

If it’s not working properly, it can cause major headaches for you and anyone else with an August Smart Lock. Luckily, replacing it is pretty easy!
