Why are Schlage locks not working after the battery change?

There are many reasons why the Schlage lock is not working after the battery change. It can be the incorrect use of batteries or hardware problems that cause the lock to stop working.

  • You insert the wrong batteries.
  • You didn’t install batteries correctly.
  • You used low-quality AA alkaline batteries.
  • The battery terminals and battery connector are dirty and bad
  • The wire lose
  • You mix insert old batteries and new batteries.

Now let’s analyze the common reasons why Schlage Keypad Lock is not working after battery change and how to fix it:

Make sure you are using the correct batteries

When your Schlage Keypad Lock does not work after the battery change, the first thing you should do is ensure that you use the correct type of battery. Different Schlage locks require different types of batteries.

For example:

  • Schlage smart lock: Schlage Sense, Schlage Encode, and Schlage Connect smart locks use four alkaline AA batteries. If The Schlage smart lock is not working after the battery change, please check whether you use four alkaline AA batteries.

  • Schlage keypad deadbolt lock: The Schlage Touch keyless BE365, BE375, BE367, FE575, FE595, BE369, and FE695 use one alkaline 9-volt battery. If the Schlage Touch keyless lock does not work after the battery change, please ensure you use one alkaline 9-volt battery.

Tip: Replace the batteries in your lock at the same time each year that you test and replace the batteries in your smoke alarms. This will ensure continued reliable operation. Use a high-quality alkaline 9-volt battery for replacement.

Make sure you install batteries correctly.

If the keypad is not working after changing the batteries, you must check that you have installed the batteries correctly.

  • When installing new AA batteries, ensure they are inserted with positive ends facing up.
  • Also, ensure nothing is blocking the sensor on each side of your lockset, as this will prevent it from communicating with your Schlage Universal Remote Control Keypad. Remove any obstructions for your lock to communicate correctly with its remote control unit.
  • Batteries have positive (+) and negative (-) ends. The positive end goes to the top, and the negative end goes to the bottom. If they’re reversed, this can cause severe damage to your lock’s internal circuitry and prevent it from functioning correctly.

Check the battery terminals and battery connectors.

Before we proceed, look at the battery terminals and connectors.

  • Check if the battery terminals and connector are clean. If they are dirty, clean them with a soft brush or cloth. Please ensure they are not bent or cracked in any way that would prevent proper connection of the battery to its terminals and connector.
  • If the battery terminals are corroded or dirty, remove them with a soft cloth. Then, apply some WD-40 or another lubricant to the terminals and try turning the keypad lock again.
  • Ensure no debris around these areas could be causing an electrical short in your lock’s circuitry.

If that doesn’t work for you, there may be something wrong with your Schlage keypad door lock (which would require a locksmith or technician to fix).

Check the wiring

Ensure there aren’t any loose connections or broken wires in your system, as this could also cause problems with your lock.

The wiring is essential to a lock; you can have issues if it’s not connected correctly. You can check the wiring by turning off your power at the circuit breaker and checking that all your wires are correctly connected.

If you have basic electrical knowledge and tools, this can be done in under an hour. You’ll need to remove the battery cover carefully without damaging it, then disconnect each of the wires from their respective terminals (they will be labeled).

Ensure there are no frayed ends or loose connections before reconnecting them to restore power to your keypad door lock system. Once complete, snap your cover back on and test it out!

Don’t mix old and new batteries.

Ensure don’t mix old and new batteries, which can damage and cause problems. Also, remember never to use cheap replacement parts for expensive locks, as they won’t last long, if at all!

You must replace all four old batteries with four new AA batteries at once—but don’t mix old and new batteries in a single keypad lock!

Factory reset your lock.

Finally, resetting your Schlage keypad lock may be necessary if it continues malfunctioning despite installing fresh batteries. To do this:

Find Schlage support

If you have checked all of these things and still find that your keypad lock is not working after replacing its batteries, then it is likely that something else may be causing this problem (such as a faulty power supply). You should contact Schlage customer support for assistance.
