But Maybe it’s not functioning as it should, or Kwikset SmartCode 913 stopped working. We’ll cover the most common Kwikset SmartCode 913 issues here and help get your lock working like new again.

The Common Kwikset SmartCode 913 issues include:

  • Kwikset SmartCode 913 flashing red light
  • Kwikset SmartCode 913 keypad light is not working
  • Kwikset smartcode 913 wont lock
  • Kwikset SmartCode 913 won’t unlock
  • Kwikset SmartCode 913 keeps locking
  • kwikset smartcode 913 lock button not working
  • Kwikset SmartCode 913 stopped working

Kwikset SmartCode 913 flashing red light

If your Kwikset Smartcode 913 is flashing red, please check the following reasons and solutions why your Kwikset SmartCode 913 is flashing red light:

  • The keypad flashes red once with one beep: The door jammed while attempting to lock. Manually re-lock the door. If needed, reposition strike.
  • The keypad flashes red three times with three beeps.
    • Unsuccessful programming. Attempt the programming procedure again.
    • One incorrect code was entered. Re-enter code.
    • No user code programmed. Program at least one user code.
  • The keypad flashes red ten times with ten beeps: Low battery. Replace batteries.
  • The lock beeps two times, or the keypad flashes red three times: Programming timeout. Attempt the programming procedure again, making sure not to pause for more than 5 seconds.
  • The keypad flashes red 15 times and beeps 15 times. Three incorrect codes are entered within one minute. After a 60-second keypad lockout, the code must be re-entered.

Please note: The beeping sound will only be heard if switch #3 is on.

  • The lock interior is not mounted perpendicular to the ground. Remount lock interior assembly as illustrated in the Kwikset deadbolt Installation Guide.
  • The hole in the door is misaligned. Disassemble the lock and reinstall it without the adapter ring on the exterior side of the door.
  • The battery level is too low. The keypad flashes red three times with three beeps, indicating the low battery. Use a fresh set of batteries and perform the door-handing process again.
  • The latch and strike are misaligned, causing the latch to bind. If you have not done so, perform the door-handing process while the door is open. If it is successful only when the door is open, the latch and strike are not aligned as they should be.

Kwikset SmartCode 913 keypad light is not working.

If your keypad light doesn’t work, it could be because of one of the following reasons:

  • Check the battery. Please make sure they are fresh and inserted correctly. The lock will not work with dead batteries or improperly inserted batteries.
  • Make sure your keypad is not damaged. Press each key on the keypad (one at a time) and listen for a beeping sound. If no beeping is heard, this is a keypad error. Contact Technical Support for further troubleshooting.
  • Check the connection between the battery and keypad: Check if anything obstructs or dislodges inside your lock that would prevent power from reaching its components properly.
  • Ensure that none of these components have been damaged during installation because they could cause issues later on down the line when trying to operate them manually.
  • Keypad lockout: If three incorrect codes were entered within one minute, the keypad would lock for 60 seconds.

Kwikset SmartCode 913 wont lock

If your door lock’s deadbolt isn’t locking, try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Check the battery. Remove the battery to see if it’s drained. If so, replace 4 AA batteries with new ones and try again (it’s important to use the same type of batteries).
  • Double-check that you’ve installed your new batteries correctly. Ensure they’re installed in a matching orientation (i.e., + side up/down) and not touching each other or any metal component on the lock mechanism.
  • Check battery contacts. Ensure there isn’t any corrosion or damage on either end of your Kwikset SmartCode 913 deadbolt’s circuit board or any other part where its components are connected (e.g., hinges). If there is any corrosion or damage, clean these areas thoroughly before reassembling everything!
  • The latch and strike are misaligned, causing the latch to bind. If it is successful only when the door is open, the latch and strike are not aligned as they should be. Ensure door preparation is following the door drilling instructions.

Kwikset SmartCode 913 won’t unlock.

If your door doesn’t unlock, check the following:

  • Make sure the door latch is fully engaged. That could be why your SmartCode 913 won’t unlock if it’s not.
  • Check the hinges on your door frame and ensure they’re in good shape. If one is loose or broken, it could prevent proper engagement of the SmartCode 913 during unlocking.
  • Check that there isn’t debris between the frame and frame jamb that prevents a seal from being made between them when they close together. This would allow water to get trapped against an exterior finish, which can cause swelling and warping over time (which will prevent proper operation).
  • Check the batteries. Make sure the batteries are new and installed correctly.
  • Check your keypad if that doesn’t work; it might also be damaged, so try replacing it if this option is!
  • Check your user code. Make sure you are using the correct user code to open the door.

Kwikset SmartCode 913 keeps locking.

If you find that your SmartCode 913 keeps locking and unlocking, there are several possible causes:

  • The extended deadbolt lock was hitting the back of the drilled frame, so it did not fully extend when it locked. I thought it was not locked and would try every 30 seconds again.
  • The internal assembly may be screwed down too tight to allow enough movement play, causing problems while using this device.
  • The door strike is not installed correctly (i.e., the bolt is too far back). You must adjust this by loosening or tightening the screws where they meet with your door’s frame.

Kwikset smartcode 913 lock button not working

Suppose your SmartCode 913 lock button is not working. The following are the possible reasons and solutions:

  • No user codes are programmed: The lock button will not lock the door if no codes are in the lock. Program at least one user code and test the Lock button again.
  • The door-handing process was not executed: Perform the door-handing process, following the instructions inside the installation guide.
  • The battery is too low to lock the door: This is indicated by the keypad flashing red three times with three beeps. Remove the batteries and replace them with a fresh set.
  • The mounting plate is placing tension on the torque blade:
    • Attempt to lock and unlock the door with the key. Remove the interior assembly from the mounting plate if it cannot rotate.
    • Test the key again. If it cannot rotate, loosen the screws on the mounting plate and reposition it so there is no tension on the cylinder torque blade.

    • Ensure the latch bolt can operate smoothly with the key and reinstall the interior assembly.
  • The clutch is disengaged:
    • Remove the battery pack. Remove the interior assembly from the door. Verify that the lock can be operated smoothly with the key while the interior is removed. Attempt to rotate the turn piece on the interior assembly to the vertical position. The clutch becomes disengaged if it cannot rotate to the vertical position.
    • Place the battery cover onto the interior assembly and align the turn piece with the shaft. Rotate the turn piece 180° clockwise (you will need to use force when rotating it, and you will hear it click). This will re-engage the clutch.

    • Align the turn piece with the torque blade and reinstall the interior assembly on the door.

The Kwikset SmartCode 913 door-handling process is not working

The Kwikset SmartCode 913 is an electronic deadbolt with a touchpad for keyless entry. One of the steps in setting up the lock is the “door handing” process, which determines the direction the latch needs to move (left or right) when the motor drives it. If the door-handling process is not working correctly, the lock may not function as intended.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

  1. Reset the Lock:
    • Remove the battery pack.
    • Press and hold the lock button on the keypad.
    • While holding the lock button, reinsert the battery pack, then release the lock button.
    • Please wait until the latch bolt starts moving on its own.
    • Once the handling process is complete, the keypad will signal with one beep if successful. It was unsuccessful if the keypad flashes red and the lock beeps three times.
  2. Check the Alignment: Ensure the door and frame are properly aligned. If the door is misaligned, it can prevent the latch from moving freely. Ensure the latch bolt can move in and out smoothly without obstructions.
  3. Manual Door Handing:
    • You can manually set the direction if the automatic door-handling process is not working.
    • With the door open, extend the latch bolt.
    • Enter your user code and immediately rotate the turnpiece 180° in the direction the latch bolt needs to travel (either left or right) to lock the door. This should set the lock’s handling.
  4. Check Batteries: Ensure you’re using fresh, high-quality batteries. Low battery power can sometimes cause the lock to behave erratically.
  5. Inspect the Latch and Strike Plate: Ensure the latch and strike plate are not rubbing or binding. The latch should move freely and smoothly into the strike plate hole when the door is closed.
