Last Updated on March 17, 2024 by Vincent Zhu

The Kwikset SmartCode deadbolt series lock is one of the best keyless door locks installed in your home. It is easy to install and has many features that make it different from regular locks.

However, you may still encounter some Kwikset SmartCode deadbolt problems during use.

Kwikset Smartcode Deadbolt troubleshooting is a simple fix for your smart code locks. With these easy steps, you can return to your house and lock it up again.

Kwikset SmartCode 909 troubleshooting

Kwikset SmartCode 909 troubleshooting

If your Kwikset Smartcode 909 deadbolt is not working, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check that the lock is powered on by pressing its button. The light should flash green for a few seconds and then turn off. If it does not, this could be due to an issue with the power source.
  • If no lights are coming on when pressing buttons on the keypad, try reprogramming them.
  • Ensure you’re using the correct key: The Kwikset 909 is programmed to recognize specific keys and reject others without unlocking. If your key isn’t working, try to rekey a Kwikset lock.
  • Check for jams: If something is blocking the lock from moving freely, it won’t be able to unlock or lock when commanded by your phone or remote control.
  • Check inside your door frame to see if anything is trapping the lock as it moves back and forth during its regular operation.
  • Is the SmartCode 909 deadbolt stuck in the lock position? Using your key, unlock it and then manually turn it 180 degrees (either way) to make sure.
  • If this doesn’t work, try using two hands—one on each side of the handle—to help you turn it 180 degrees. This may require more strength than usual!
  • Ensure you are using the correct user code to open the door. If your user code is incorrect, you must change the code on your Kwikset Smartcode 909.

Kwikset SmartCode 910 troubleshooting

Kwikset SmartCode 910 troubleshooting

If your SmartCode 910 Kwikset lock is not working at all, try a few troubleshooting steps to get it working again:

  • Check the batteries. If they are low or dead, replace them with new ones and try again.
  • Ensure you have suitable batteries installed in your Kwikset SmartCode 910 lock.
  • Check that your batteries are installed correctly in their compartment on the back of the lock. When troubleshooting this issue, they might have been dislodged during the Kwikset Deadbolt installation by accident or on purpose.
  • Ensure that the battery contacts aren’t dirty or corroded so they can contact each other properly when installing new batteries (or removing old ones).
  • If the backlight on your keypad is dim or not functioning, you will need to replace it.

Kwikset SmartCode 911 troubleshooting

If your Kwikset SmartCode 911 is not working well, several things could be wrong here:

  • Make sure that the problem isn’t with the keypad. If using a keyless entry system, ensure your programmable lock works correctly before troubleshooting other components.
  • Ensure batteries have enough juice and aren’t dead yet, or buy new batteries if they die out quickly.
  • Look at how well-aligned all parts of your SmartCode deadbolt are, including its latch and function—if any of these parts misalign when locked into place.
  • Try removing and re-inserting the battery again (you can also do this by pressing “Lock” twice).
  • Make sure there’s no debris blocking any locks’ functions (and clean them if necessary).

Kwikset SmartCode 911 troubleshooting

If your Kwikset SmartCode deadbolt 911 jams and the door cannot lock.

  • The door-handing process was not executed during installation: Perform the door-handing function in the Installation Guide.
  • The hole in the door is misaligned: Disassemble the lock and reinstall it without the adapter ring on the exterior side of the door.
  • The wrong deadbolt latch is installed: SmartCode deadbolts require a tapered latch bolt for easy operation. If the latch used is from an older lock, it will likely not have a sharp latch bolt. Remove the lock from the door, including the old latch. Replace with the new latch and reinstall the lock.
  • The deadbolt latch and strike are misaligned: Adjust the tab of the lower strike (for your knob or lever) to help align the upper latch and strike so that the latch bolt enters the strike when the door is locked.
  • The lower latch and lower strike (for your knob or lever) are misaligned, putting too much load on the deadbolt latch:  As a test, rotate the turn piece on the deadbolt so the latch is retracted (unlocked), and close the door. If you have to push, pull, or lift the door to get it to close, adjust the position of the lower strike.
  • The hole in the door frame for the latch bolt is not drilled deep enough: Make sure the hole in the door frame is drilled at least 1″ (25 mm) deep.
  • The mounting plate places tension on the torque blade. Attempt to lock and unlock the door with the key. Remove the interior assembly from the mounting plate if it cannot rotate. Test the key again. If it cannot rotate, loosen the screws on the mounting plate and reposition the container, so there is no tension on the cylinder torque blade. Ensure the latch bolt can operate smoothly with the key and reinstall the interior assembly.
  • The clutch is disengaged: Remove the interior assembly from the door. Verify that the lock can be operated smoothly with the key while the interior is removed. Attempt to rotate the turn piece on the interior assembly. If it does not rotate smoothly, the clutch becomes disengaged. Rotate the turn piece 180° clockwise (you will need to use force when rotating it, and you will hear it click). This will re-engage the clutch. Align the turn piece with the torque blade and reinstall the interior assembly on the door.
  • The latch is installed upside down: A quick way to tell that the latch is upside down is to look at the face of the cylinder. If it is upside down, the latch is installed upside down.

To troubleshoot your Kwikset SmartCode 913 lock, you’ll need to start with the following steps:

  • Make sure the keypad is clean and free of debris. If it’s dirty, wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it air dry before continuing.
  • If your Kwikset SmartCode 913 lock isn’t responding, try changing the batteries before moving on to other troubleshooting steps.
  • Make sure that the batteries are in correctly. The battery should be inserted with the plus (+) side facing up and the negative (-) side facing down.
  • Ensure that your code is entered correctly every time you enter it into the keypad. If it’s possible to have an error in entering numbers or letters, then there’s a chance of getting locked out! Otherwise, you must change the code on your Kwikset SmartCode 913 lock.
  • Try pressing all buttons on each side of the lock simultaneously. Sometimes, this wakes up whatever magical energy source keeps all electronic devices running smoothly.
  • If you still have trouble with the SmartCode deadbolt after replacing the battery, remove and re-add it from within the app.

The Status LED is solid red after the door handing process for the Kwikset SmartCode 913 lock.

  • The lock interior is not mounted perpendicular to the ground: Remount lock interior assembly as illustrated in the Installation Guide.
  • The hole in the door is misaligned: Disassemble the lock and reinstall it without the adapter ring on the exterior side of the door.
  • The latch is installed upside down:
  • The battery level is too low: This is indicated by the keypad flashing red three times with three beeps. Use a fresh set of batteries, and perform the door-handing process again.
  • The latch and strike are misaligned, causing the latch to bind. If you have not already done so, perform the door-handing process while the door is open. If it is successful only when the door is open, the latch and strike are not aligned as they should be. Ensure door preparation is by the door drilling instructions available online.

Kwikset SmartCode 914 troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble getting your Kwikset SmartCode 914 lock to work, there are a few other things to check:

  • If your door doesn’t open or close, it could be because of something as simple as a bad connection between your deadbolt’s interior and exterior parts. Make sure that they’re securely connected before moving on.
  • If it’s not responding or if its response time seems unusually slow, make sure its batteries aren’t dead (or going dead).
  • If your door is not opening, first check the batteries. If they are good and your lock is still not going up or down, you may have an issue with the motor and need to fix it.
  • If your door is not locking, ensure no obstructions prevent it from moving correctly. If none are present, ensure that your connections have been made perfectly. In addition to checking for obstacles in the path of motion of your handle/lock assembly, check that wires coming from inside of the handle/lock assembly (if applicable) aren’t broken or disconnected.
  • If your door is not unlocking, ensure that all connections are correct before replacing any parts.

Kwikset SmartCode 914 troubleshooting

The Kwikset SmartCode 914 deadbolt latch does not extend or retract.

  • The door handing process was not performed correctly: Press and hold the Lock button until the battery pack is fully inserted into the interior assembly and the latch bolt starts to move on its own.
  • The latch and strike are misaligned, causing the latch to bind. If you have not already done so, perform the door-handing process while the door is open. If it is successful only when the door is open, the latch and strike are not aligned as they should be. Ensure door preparation is by the door drilling instructions available online.
  • The keypad is unresponsive: Make sure switch #3 is on. Use a fresh set of batteries and perform the door-handing process. If the latch does not extend or retract and the lock does not beep, press each key on the keypad (one at a time) and listen for a beeping sound. If no beeping is heard, this is a keypad error. Contact Technical Support for further troubleshooting.

  • The lock is not close enough to the controller: Some Z-wave systems require that the lock is within 12″ of the controller during the pairing process. Remove the interior assembly from the mounting plate if the lock has already been installed on the door. Make sure the batteries are installed, and bring the interior assembly next to the controller. Follow your intelligent home system’s instructions to begin pairing at the controller. The lock may need to remain stationary for 60 seconds during pairing.

Kwikset SmartCode 917 troubleshooting

Kwikset SmartCode 917 troubleshooting

If you are having a problem with your Kwikset SmartCode 917 Deadbolt, check the following:

  • If your door is not aligned correctly with the strike plate, there may not be enough tension on the striker to allow for the proper operation of the bolt. Make sure that everything is lined up correctly, and try again.
  • Make sure that there is power to the deadbolt. Check if there is a power cord connected and if it’s plugged in. If not, plug it into an outlet that works.
  • Next, go outside to check for any damage to your door lock or deadbolt, such as rusting screws, broken springs, or damaged cylinders (the part that holds an essential component). Once you’ve identified these issues, take care of repairing them first before trying again.
  • Replace batteries in both of your batteries if they are old or low on charge.
  • Confirm that all wires are connected correctly at each wire connection end (power cord to battery pack; battery pack to keypad).
  • Reset the smart lock. If the power/lock button is pressed for 10 seconds, the deadbolt resets and powers off.
