The Defiant Electronic Keypad Deadbolt bolt will retract but will not extend
I have a Defiant Electronic Keypad Deadbolt #1001 392 551 with New batteries. The bolt will retract but will not extend.
The internal mechanism is operating to unlock the bolt and makes the same sounds when asked to lock the bolt, but the bolt will not come out.
Any ideas?

It sounds like your Defiant Electronic Keypad Deadbolt is experiencing a mechanical issue. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
- Check the Bolt and Door Alignment: Sometimes, if the door and frame are not correctly aligned, the bolt can have difficulty extending. Open the door and try to extend the bolt to see if it works without obstructing the door frame. If the bolt extends properly with the door open, you may need to adjust your door’s alignment.
- Check for Obstructions: Remove the lock from the door and check for any debris or obstructions that may be causing the bolt not to extend properly.
- Battery Power: Even though the batteries are new, check to ensure they are installed correctly and provide enough power. Low battery power can sometimes cause incomplete or incorrect operation of the lock.
- Lubricate the Bolt: The lock mechanism can become stiff or jammed over time. Use a silicone or graphite-based lubricant (never oil) to lubricate the bolt and see if that helps. Do not over-lubricate, as this can attract dirt and cause future issues.
- Reset and Recalibrate: Some electronic locks have a recalibration or reset process that may fix the issue. Refer to your user manual for specific instructions for your model.
- Remove and Reinstall: If the bolt still doesn’t extend, you may want to remove the lock from the door and examine it for any visible issues. Something inside the lock may have become misaligned, broken, or jammed.
- Contact Customer Support: If the bolt still won’t extend after trying these steps, there’s likely an issue with the lock mechanism. Contact Defiant’s customer service for further assistance. Given the model number and the specific problem, they should be able to provide targeted advice.
As always, safety should be your primary concern. If the lock isn’t functioning correctly and you’re not confident in repairing it, it’s better to seek professional help to ensure your home’s security isn’t compromised.
