Last Updated on March 17, 2024 by Vincent Zhu

The Kevo is a smart deadbolt that allows you to lock and unlock your door with a smartphone. It’s a cool idea, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. If you’re having trouble with the Kevo, this post will help get you back on track!

If your Kevo Lock is not working, don’t worry. Here are some troubleshooting tips that should help get things back on track:

  • Check that the battery has power. If it doesn’t, it will need to be replaced.
  • Check that the batteries are installed correctly. The battery compartment should be located on the underside of your Kwikset Kevo smart lock, near where it connects to your door frame with two screws.

  • Check that you are using the correct app. The Kevo app supports both Android and iOS devices. If possible, update your software to the latest version. If this does not work, uninstall and reinstall the app (see below).
  • Check that Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone or tablet. Open settings and look for “Bluetooth” under Networks & Internet settings; make sure it’s turned on by tapping on it once or twice until a checkmark appears in blue next to its name.
  • Check for connectivity issues between your phone’s Bluetooth connection and the Lock itself. You can do this by removing obstacles between yourself and each device—including walls or other objects—and see if anything improves after reconnecting them!
  • Try using another device. Ensure that the problem isn’t just limited to one device; try pairing your Lock with another smartphone or tablet if there’s something wrong with the device itself.
  • Check the battery level on both devices involved in the pairing process; low power could prevent the connection between the device(s), thus resulting in unsuccessful pairing attempts due to insufficient power supply levels being reached during operation.

If your Kevo Lock is not pairing with the smartphone app, it could be one of these common problems.

  • The battery in your smartphone may be dead or low on power. Now, please change with four new AA batteries.
  • If you continue pairing issues, try resetting your hub by unplugging it from both power and the internet for one minute before plugging it back in and turning it on again.
  • Make sure you have enabled Bluetooth on your phone.
  • Verify using the correct Wi-Fi network name and password when connecting your mobile device to your Lock’s network.
  • Your phone is out of range from the Lock. Please ensure there are no obstacles between you and your smartphone when pairing it with Kevo Locks (e.g., walls). Also, check that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.

Kevo Lock is not connecting.

If the Kevo Lock is not connecting, it can be a frustrating and confusing experience. Here are some things to check that might help you get your Lock working again:

  • Make sure that your phone is not in airplane mode.
  • Try to connect your Kevo Locks to another Bluetooth device (phone) and see if they respond properly. If they do not respond properly, something is wrong with your Lock or phone. It may also indicate a problem with the Wi-Fi network you use for remote access.
  • Ensure the Kevo app is fully updated, and there aren’t any updates for your device. You can do this by tapping “My Devices” in the top menu of your app and selecting Update All from there.
  • Ensure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on on your phone or tablet and within range. If this isn’t possible due to location or space constraints, try moving closer together or one closer so they’re within range of each other again before trying anything else!
  • Make sure there’s nothing wrong with either one – like if someone has changed settings recently without telling you (which happens ALL THE TIME), or if they’re running low on battery power themselves before trying anything else too :)

If your Kevo Lock is not responding, you may have a problem with the battery or a connection issue.

  • Ensure your smartphone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Kevo Lock.
  • If this does not fix the issue, try resetting your Kevo app and logging back into it. If this does not work, try changing your Wi-Fi device locations.
  • The battery is low, and the light on your Lock flashes red. Replace the batteries.
  • You’re away from home but forgot to turn off your Kevo Lock. Manually turn it off when you are away from home for an extended period (more than 2 hours).
  • Your door isn’t locked or unlocked as expected after tapping on a door handle icon in the Kevo app or using voice commands with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri. Check if Bluetooth-enabled devices are near the Lock (e.g., Apple Watch).

Kevo’s touch to open is not working.

Kevo touch to open not working

If your Kevo touch-to-open isn’t working properly, you can check a few things to ensure it is malfunctioning.

  • Incorrect Touch Location: Make sure you are touching the deadbolt rose. The light ring will not react if you touch the face of the Lock.
  • Dead or Incorrectly Installed Batteries: Ensure the batteries in the interior assembly are working and correctly installed.
  • Touching Kevo too soon after enrolling your device: Kevo is still processing your device’s security certificate after device enrollment. Wait a few seconds, and try again.
  • Tamper Mode Activated: If the Lock is touched excessively, it will go into Tamper Mode to prevent unauthorized access and keep the battery from draining. The Lock will return to normal functionality after a short timeout period.
  • Ensure Bluetooth is turned on: If Bluetooth isn’t enabled on either device used during the pairing process (your phone/tablet), there won’t be communication between these two items.
  • Make sure it’s very close to the door. The device needs to be within about three feet of the door to work properly, so if you can’t get it to work from inside your house but can from outside, reposition yourself or move closer to be within range.
  • Inspect the device for any physical damage, such as dents or cracks that could interfere with its ability to connect with your smartphone or gateway properly.

Kevo App keeps searching.

The Kevo app keeps searching

If your Kevo Lock keeps searching for the Lock, it could be due to several reasons.

First, you should check your internet connection and ensure it’s strong and stable. If your internet is fine, we recommend power cycling the Lock (turning off power to the device for several seconds). Once this is done, try using the app again and see if it connects successfully.

You can troubleshoot your Kevo by going to the Settings menu and tapping “Add Device.” If this doesn’t work, your Kevo may be offline. Check the following:

  • Check that both devices are within range (roughly 30 feet).
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
  • Ensure you have an active internet connection on your phone or tablet to sync with the Kevo Cloud Service.

Kevo is not working on Android.

If you’re having trouble with your Kevo app on an Android device, the first thing to do is check all of the following:

  • Ensure your phone and Kevo are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If they aren’t, it’s possible that they won’t be able to connect.
  • Ensure that both devices are within range of each other (ideally within about 10 feet). This can be tricky if you have a large house or apartment and have thick walls throughout, but both devices need to be able to communicate with one another.
  • Ensure both devices are fully charged and have enough battery life left over at home and when traveling away.
  • Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Kevo App on your Android phone; this should fix the issue if you have updated it recently. If this does not work, try restarting your phone and installing again.

Kevo local connection error.

If you’re trying to connect your Kevo lock to the app or cloud service, there’s a good chance the device has issues.

Check your Kevo’s battery level: if it’s below 20% and you’ve already tried resetting everything, consider replacing it with a new one.

Another potential issue to look out for is that your Kevo isn’t connected properly through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. To check whether this is the case, follow these steps:

  • Remove all other Bluetooth devices from pairing mode (this includes smartwatches).
  • Go into Settings on your phone and make sure that Wi-Fi connections are turned off (or at least set not to auto-connect).

Kevo plus troubleshooting

Kevo plus not connecting to the internet

If you’re having trouble connecting Kevo plus a gateway to the internet, try the following steps:

  • Ensure your Kevo Plus gateway is charged and has a good Wi-Fi connection. If you still can’t connect, restart your Kevo and router.
  • Check if you used the same network name (SSID) before. If so, power cycle both devices again and make sure they are set up to connect automatically in their settings.
  • If there was no problem connecting with your previous network name (SSID), try changing it from an open network (no password) to a WPA2-PSK secured connection with WPA/WPA2 encryption by following these instructions:

  • Ensure the Kevo Smart Lock is installed and paired successfully to the phone as the Owner.
  • Ensure you have downloaded and installed the latest Kevo app on the phone.
  • Ensure the Kevo Plus gateway and a live Internet connection are connected to the router.

If your Kevo Plus gateway has issues connecting to the internet, you may need to perform a factory reset. This will erase all settings on your Kevo Plus gateway and reinstall the app on your phone or tablet.

To perform a factory reset Kevo Plus gateway, Insert a small pin or paper clip into the hole next to the antenna to restore all settings to factory default.
