As a hotel owner, I would like to understand how to legally open the hotel door latch from the outside if the guest has not responded and has locked the door from the inside.

Additionally, I am concerned about the possibility that criminals could bypass these door latches from outside the room and what security measures can be taken to prevent such a breach. In these situations, what are the recommended procedures and best practices that address both guest safety and hotel room security?

Normally, if your hotel uses modern electronic hotel door locks, such as RFID hotel lock systems, you should be able to open the hotel door latch from the outside with emergency key cards, mechanical keys, and master key cards. These methods can only be used by authorized individuals, such as registered guests or hotel staff.

Currently, most RFID hotel lock systems are equipped with mechanical keys, emergency key cards, and master key cards to open hotel room doors in emergencies, and of course, hotel door latches.

Note: The hotel door latch here refers to the deadbolt latch equipped with the hotel lock itself. If it is an auxiliary additional security device, such as a swing bar, hotel chain lock, or extra hotel door latch, other methods are required to open it.

Take the RFID hotel lock system as an example:

Using the master key card
Step 1: Touch the master key card to the card reader.
Step 2: Wait for the indicator light. A green light usually means that the door is unlocked.
Step 3: Turn the door handle and open the door. Some electronic locks may require the handle to be pulled up or down depending on the design.

Using the mechanical key
Step 1: Insert the key into the keyhole.
Step 2: Gently but firmly turn the key in the designated direction until you feel the lock disengage.
Step 3: Turn the door handle and open the door.

Using the Emergency Key Card
Step 1: In situations where emergency access is required (e.g., guest lockout or emergency), an authorized person finds the emergency key card and performs the unlocking.
Step 2: Tap the emergency key card to the reader on the RFID hotel lock. Wait for the indicator light. A green light usually means the door is unlocked.
Step 3: Once access is gained, make sure the door is relocked or held open.

Disarming Additional Security Devices
If the door has additional security devices such as swing bar, hotel chain lock, or extra hotel door latch, these devices must be manually disarmed from inside the room.

If the door has additional security features such as a rocker, hotel interlock, or additional hotel door latches, then you will need some additional tools or methods to open it.

Here are some of the necessary tools and their applications:

The hotel door latch opener tool: allows hotel employees and emergency personnel to gain immediate entry through doors with a locked swing arm security latch. In emergencies, it’s crucial to access a room swiftly; this tool facilitates that without causing damage to the door or frame.

Latch Slip Tool: This thin, flexible tool bypasses swing bar latches. It slips between the door and frame, lifting the swing bar off its catch.

Plastic Door Shim: Similar to the latch slip tool, bypassing swing bar latches. A thin, flexible plastic sheet can be inserted between the door and frame to disengage the latch.

Under-the-Door Tool: This tool manipulates the inside door handle or latch from the outside. It is a long, flexible tool that can be slid under the door, allowing the user to pull down on the inside door handle or disengage a latch.

It’s crucial to emphasize that these tools should only be used for legitimate reasons and emergencies. Unauthorized use can lead to legal consequences and is considered a breach of privacy.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Assess the Situation: Before opening the door, ensure there’s a genuine reason, such as a medical emergency, fire, or a guest lockout.
  2. Use the Emergency Access Tool: Insert the tool between the door and the frame, maneuvering it to lift the swing bar off its catch.

Once the door is opened, ensure the guest’s safety and address the reason for the emergency. If the door or latch was damaged during the process, report it to hotel maintenance for repair.

I have a few other possible alternatives like using a thin plastic card, a latch sliding tool, or a thin metal strip.

  1. Check the gap: Before you release the latch, check the gap between the door and the door frame. Make sure there is enough clearance.
  2. Insert the tool: Gently insert the tool of your choice into the gap above the swing bar. Aim for the area where the swing bar meets the strike plate.
  3. Apply pressure: Using gentle but firm pressure, move the tool downward in an attempt to push the swing bar up and away from the strike plate.
  4. Open the door: Once the swing bar is disengaged, you should be able to fully open the door.

Remember to make sure you have a legitimate reason and, if possible, get permission or notify the guest before unlatching a door. Unauthorized or unnecessary attempts to unlatch a hotel door can be considered a privacy violation and may have legal consequences.

Here are some tips to avoid unauthorized access and lock-picking:

Use a more advanced hotel locking system.

  • Use RFID hotel lock systems: RFID hotel locks use key cards with an embedded chip that communicates with the lock via radio waves. These locks can be programmed with guest key cards, ensuring that only authorized key cards can grant access.
  • Use mobile access hotel locks (Bluetooth): Mobile access hotel locks enable mobile devices to act as key cards. Guests can unlock their rooms using their smartphones, reducing the risk of key card loss and allowing access to be issued and revoked remotely.
  • Biometric systems: Some high-end hotels use biometric systems such as fingerprint or facial recognition for access, providing a personalized high level of security for each guest.

Use additional security locks

  • Bolts and spring locks: For added security, many hotel doors are equipped with manual bolts or spring locks that can only be operated from inside the room.
  • High-security door chains and rockers: These door chains and rockers allow the door to be partially opened to verify the identity of the visitor while ensuring the door is secure.
Portable hotel door locks: These small and portable locks can help you easily lock your hotel door from the inside.

Use electronic alarm systems

  • Door ajar alarms: Some hotel rooms are equipped with systems that alert the front desk or security if a door is left ajar for too long.
  • Entry/exit alarms: Alarms triggered when a door is forced open or an invalid key card is repeatedly used to prevent unauthorized entry and alert hotel staff.
